Libby
Skala mesmerizes audience with
Lilia!
When the
lights went down on DFT's production of
Lilia!
the
theater was silent. Audience members were so engaged in the production they
did not want to leave when it was over. Nearly half the audience stayed to
meet and talk with Libby Skala and ask her questions about herself and her
grandmother. Here is just one of the great emails we have received
from audience members...
"Lilia! was wonderful! And Libby
Skala was such a beautiful joyful woman! And exceptional
actress! Her transitions with her face and body were
amazingly effortless ... yet powerfully effective. And
the grace with which she danced between those chairs!
We're so
glad that we got to meet Libby after in the question-and-answer session!
I wish I could stop using exclamation points, but how else to punctuate what
was an extraordinary and memorable afternoon?!?
Everyone I introduced to the DFT was simply grateful to have shared
the experience. "

Showing
your love for DFT
We are so excited by the
wonderful support we
have received in the
past two years aswe have
been working toward our
financial and artistic
recovery. We have
increased our grants and
corporate sponsorships
by more than 10 times
what they were in 2006.
We still have a way to
go to reach our numbers
from earlier years, but
we are on the right
track. We increased this
year from two mainstage
performances to three
with one of those being
a large book musical. We
also added more
theatricales to provide
a variety of artistic
experiences. Our
individual donations are
strong and we even had
an increase in
individual donations
over
$1000.00.
<-Volunteers learn about
DFT activities at
annual Volunteer Tea.
Administratively we have
worked very hard to
provide the support DFT
needs for success and to
prove to our supporters
and community members
that we are committed to
continuing to move DFT
into the future...but
there are some areas
where we really need
some help.
What can you do?
One of the most
important things you can
do is purchase tickets.
It's simple enough, but
ticket sales are
extremely important in
our ability to pay the
high costs of presenting
work. Did
you know that it costs
us a minimum of $1000
for EVERY night of a
performance of one of
our musicals? That
is just the cost of rent
and royalties alone and
does not include the
cost of sets, costumes,
lighting equipment,
props, etc.
That is one reason our
ticket buyers are so
important to us.
Maybe the show isn't
something you are sure
you will like...or maybe
it isn't something you
have heard of
before...Come see it
anyway! You will be
supporting DFT AND you
may be surprised to find
that something you were
hesitant to see is
something you enjoy
immensely.
What else can
you do?
VOLUNTEER!
We have really fun
volunteer opportunities
available. While we love
our house managers and
ushers, we find many
people happy to do that.
But we have also great
jobs backstage.
You can help set props,
move scenerey (usually
designed on wheels or
otherwise to be light),
help with quick costume
changes, learn to run
the light board, run a
follow spot, assistant
direct, support the
stage manager....there
are many jobs that
require little or no
skill and others for
which we are happy to
provide training. It is
really great fun to bond
with the cast and see
what goes on behind the
scenes. In
all honesty, if we are
not able to find people
to help in this area, we
will have to continue to
produce smaller-scale
shows. We just
cannot produce a large
show that requires a lot
of scene changes if we
cannot find people to
help make those scene
changes happen
backstage.
All crew members, set
builders and backstage
helpers also receive
complementary tickets to
our performances.
SHARE YOUR SKILLS WITH
THE STEERING COMMITTEE.
Do you know marketing,
fundraising, community
connection building, PR,
development, finance,
law? We need
people in
all these areas to come
help us on the steering
committee. You will get
to take on special tasks
and take ownership of
your projects. You will
hlep us continue down
the road to success. We
really need your help!
GET THE WORD OUT!
Tell all your friends
about DFT. Let them know
about the wonderful
theater right in their
own community. Do you
live in an HOA
community? Do they have
a newsletter? Ask
if you can submit
informaiton about DFT.
We're happy to create a
"blurb" for you or you
can find all the
information about our
shows on the website.
The blurb could just say
"DFT presents,
Lilia! a great
one-woman show.
January
20 at 2 p.m. For details
to the DFT website).
Do you belong to a
woman's club or Rotary
or Kiwanis? DFT has
postcards and fliers and
posters you can put out.
Ask if DFT events can be
included in their
newsletter.
Forward this newsletter
to family and

one.
It takes a community to

Every one of you
is important to our
success.

Help spread the
word about DFT
shows or help
ensure we are
providing the
services our
community needs.
When you attend
Desert Foothills
Theater
productions, you
always hear that
this is a
volunteer/community
theater
organization.
What does that
mean? It means
we are here to
support our
community and to
provide
theatrical
attedance and
performance/back
stage
work opportunities
to all who live
here.
It also means
that a large
part of the work
it takes to make
that happen is
done by
volunteers. From
our steering
committee to our
ushers and house
managers to our
backstage crew
to our actors
... many, many
people volunteer
time to make
sure our
productions run
smoothly.
Have you always
wanted to learn
more about
theater? Have
you been
interested in
learning more
about what
really goes on
behind the
scenes of our
productions?
Do you want to
help spread the
word about the
great work of
DFT? We
could use your
help!
Right
now we are
inviting
participation in
our "Get the
Word Out"
committee.
This
committee is
focused on
creative
strategies,
grassroots
efforts and
other ways to
help spread the
word about our
shows and
programs and get
people to come
see what we have
to offer.
You don't need
any experience
to join the
committee...just
a desire to help
DFT be the best
it can be. Some
of the things
this committee
does are:
1.) Make some
groundwork phone
calls...looking
for the right
contact people,
etc. for our
marketing team
to appraoch with
various ideas.
Right now, we're
looking for some
strong group
contacts. A
volunteer in
this position
could call a
variety of
groups, senior
homes, social
organizations,
etc. to get the
best contact
name/number to
contact
regarding
potential group
sales.
2.) Help us
distribute
marketing
materials...We
are looking for
people who would
be willing to
spend a couple
of hours
delivering
materials to
various
distribution
sites. Posters,
fliers, etc.
3.) Help us make
sure our
information gets
out to all the
possible
resources in the
area. Make some
phone calls to
area homeowners
associations to
discover
possibilities
for lisitng or
advertisement in
their
newsletters.
4.) Brainstorm
some fun,
creative ways to
spread the word.
Maybe there's
something we
haven't though
to try
before..We want
to hear from
you.
To help with
this committee,
please email
Meribeth at
meribeth@desertfoothillstheater.com.
Please include
name and phone
number and tasks
above that sound
interesting to
you.
We want
to hear from
you!
Would you be
willing to spend
an hour or so on
a weeknight
sharing with us
your opinions,
thoughts, etc.
on Desert
Foothills
Theater? In an
effort to ensure
we are providing
what our
community
needs/wants, we
would like to
start a series
of focus groups.
We are looking
for DFT audience
members, DFT
volunteers, DFT
artists as well
as those who
have never seen
a DFT
performance
and/or area
business
leaders. If you
would be willing
to consider a
focus group
position, please
email Meribeth
at
meribeth@desertfoothillstheater.com
and we will put
you on our focus
group list.
We'll contact
you regarding
potential
dates/times as
soon as they are
set.
Last,
but definintely
not least...
Our upcoming
produciton of
Lilia!
has received
rave reviews
wherever it has
been performed
throughout the
world. It
is a
heartwarming
story about
Lilia Skala.
An architect in
Austria, Ms.
Skala left when
the Nazis came
and traveled to
the United
States. Here,
she became an
actress -- even
receiving an
Academy
Award-nomination
for her role in
Lillies of
the Field
with Sidney
Portier.
The story is
told by her
granddaughter,
actress Libby
Skala.
Libby plays all
the roles in the
production and
portrays her
grandmother with
unique insight.
Bruce Weber of
the New York
Times writes of
her performance:
"Ms. Skala does
a marvelous
rendition, in an
evocative Middle
European patois,
of her
grandmother's
velveteen, old
world charm that
sheaths a steel
will. An adoring
portrait...
Libby Skala is
magnetic in a
part that
clearly means
the world to
her."

We’re not in Minnesota anymore…Don’t
miss the return of this uproarious
comedy about Lena and Carl, two
Minnesotans who visit our fair state
to see if they really want to live
here. Accompanied by
hilarious song parodies set to
popular Christmas carol tunes!
A cast of six talented men and women
use their singing and acting talents
to tell the story through 20
familiar holiday tunes with new
lyrics.
The
audience will enjoy hearing the
holiday tunes they recognize and get
a chuckle out of the Johnsons’ view
of Arizona idiosyncrasies. Seating
will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the show
will begin at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are
$50 each and include a delicious
dinner and soft drinks.
Catered by Blazing Saddles Western
events, the dinner follows the
Cowboy theme with BBQ Beef
sandwiches (sauce on side), country
beans, tossed green salad,
softdrinks, wine and dessert.
Remember, proceeds from this event
help underwrite the programs of
Desert Foothills Theater.
Seating is reserved. Bring lots of
friends and share a table and a lot
of laughs.

Help us make Gypsy a
Success!
In keeping with our use of
the "F" word, we have lots
of "f"un ways you can help
make our upcoming production
of Gypsy
a success.
Let
everyone know you
are excited about Gypsy.
One
great way you can help is
just by telling every one
you know how excited you are
about DFT and our upcoming
production of
Gypsy.
Tell them they can purchase
tickets online at
http://www.desertfoothillstheater.com
OR by phone at 480-488-1981.
Help us get our posters
displayed.
We
have posters for
Gypsy all
ready to get put up, but we
need some folks to help us
get them into windows all
through the town. Just
call 480-488-1090 and
get directions to our
office/the FCF office where
the posters are sitting on
the counter waiting for you.
Just write down where you
get them posted and drop it
back in the office or FAX it
to 480-488-2310.
We
also have Gypsy
postcards we need to get
distributed to every
business in town. We want to
paint the town
Gypsy. Enjoy
this beautiful weather by
walking through Carefree and
Cave Creek and helping your
favorite theater at the same
time. Postcards will
be available for pickup in
the FCF office later this
week. Call 480-488-1090 to
let them know you are
coming.
Invite some groups to
attend!
We
have a whole list of large
groups of people who have
come to our events in the
past. If you have a few
minutes and a telephone, you
can call these groups for us
and let them know we have
special group pricing (a
group consists of 10 or more
people attending the same
show together). If you'd
like to help with this,
email Meribeth at
meribeth@desertfoothillstheater.com
Help get the sets built
Our
set designer has created a
wonderful, detailed set
building schedule.
Just look it over and email
our managing producer, Wes
at
wesdft@wslighting.com if
you are able to help.
Have some serious fun
backstage
We
still have a few backstage
positions avaialable.
Have an opportunity to see
what a production looks like
from behind the curtain.
Help actors with quick
costume changes or dress in
black and help change sets
or make sure the props are
where they need to be.
Email Wes at
wesdft@wslighting.com if
you would like to help out
backstage.
Help us on our
Marketing Committee
We have some positions open
on our marketing committee.
You don't need to have any
experience..just lots of
enthusiasm and a desire to
sink your teeth into some
fun work. We have a great
chairperson, Bob Capelli.
Email Meribeth at
meribeth@desertfoothillstheater.com and
let her know you're ready to
go.
Enjoy a good
party?
We would love some more help
in the planning and
implementation of some of
our upcoming "party" events
such as our theatricales,
etc. We have the
spectacular
Gypsy Gala and
the super fun
Coyote Dreams theatricale
coming up. If you would like
to help with any of these,
email Pat Bryda at
patbryda@msn.com. She'd
love to hear from you!
Again, no experience
necessary...just enthusiasm
and energy.
An early
reminder of a super fun
upcoming event

EVERYONE IS INVITED

great night out with friends. Tables are

reserve a 10 seater or bring 5 friends
and reserve a 6-seater.

Volunteers -- the lifeblood of DFT
Volunteers
are the lifeblood of DFT, literally.
They are everywhere and are so important
to everything we do. Whether they serve
on our steering committee and work
behind the scenes to make the theater a
success or they work on stage or back
stage or build sets or usher. Each
and every job is integral to the success
of an organization. It is when all these
parts come together that we have great
shows and great fun!
There are a number of ways people can
help. The first is with our
upcoming production of Gypsy. We
are looking for people to work
backstage, to run the followspot, to
help build sets, to work with costumes,
to organize and secure props and so much
more.

And in keeping with our focus on fun we make it
fun and easy to register for volunteer work.
Our website has a
volunteer sign-up form where you can submit
your contact information and note the specific
area where you'd like to help. We also have a
lot of set building/painting and work days
coming up (between now and Oct. 29).
