Acting Up!
Beginning theater acting
classes and musical movement.
Let’s start at the
very beginning…from facial expressions to simple theater vocabulary
to simple movement on stage to expanded storytelling; this class is
where to start in theater training. Students will also explore
literacy skills including the understanding of beginning, middle and
end in storytelling and clear exposition. This class will help
improve your child’s reading comprehension as they learn to explore
characters and character development.

Theater I
Introduction to theater and
movement for the stage. Theater I is a pre-requisite theater II classes.
If you always
dreamed about being on stage, then this is the place to start. Come
learn theater vocabulary, beginning stage movement, good projection,
beginning dance movement and much more as we explore those skills
necessary for you to become a good actor. You will also learn the
discipline and rehearsal etiquette expected from actors in the
field. Teatro. Students will share their learning through a winter
performance of short scene work and will take part in a Gecko Teatro
spring production. Students are expected to attend all classes as
they will be rehearsing with others in class and attendance is
important.

Theater II
By audition only.
Prepare a 1-2 Minute Monologue. Optional song with or without a dance. Silent
blocking and presentation, listening to dialogue on stage, reacting
to actor’s lines, audition techniques for both stage and commercial/tv/movies.
Working with props.
This class is for students who
already have some beginning stage experience. Students will be asked
to prepare a short memorized monologue (no more than 2
minutes—samples may be found here.
Those who wish may also perform a short section of an optional song
with or without dance movement. In Theater II,
students will gain a greater knowledge of
stage blocking and presentation, and will explore how to listen to
and react to dialogue on stage, work with
props and costumes and techniques
for participation in a scene even when you have no lines. You
will also learnaudition techniques for theater and film to help you feel more
comfortable when auditioning for productions.

The Art of Theater ~
Grades 3-5
Costume and Prop
Crafting for the Stage
Come learn the skills
used to create costumes, masks and props for the theatre. Students
receive hands-on experience using various sewing and crafting tools
andmaterials, and will participate in creating costumes, props and
maybe even masks to be used in our spring mainstage production. This
is a great exploratory class for boys and girls who are interested
in theater but are uneasy with the idea of performing in front of
people.
Theater

taking this class between the time when school lets out and Theater
II begins. Class size is limited, so register early.

Theater Tech
Introduction to elements of
design in theater, including work in lighting, sound and set
design. Working with color and texture in both sound and lighting.
Understanding how technical elements work together.

Learn beginning
design elements for backstage work in the theater. Explore elements
of lighting design, sound design and set design and gain an
understanding of how these elements combine with acting to make
productions come alive. If you have always loved theater, but
on-stage work is not for you, then give theater tech a try! Students
will participate in classroom work and laboratory experience with
actual lighting equipment at the BMES Black Box Theater and the Fine
Arts Center. Students in the fall semester 2007 class were able to work
on DFT's Main Stage production of Gypsy running follow spot or
working shift crew. They also were able to develop a sound score and
design lighting for the BMES Black Box haunted house and run lights
for DAMS band and chorus concerts. Students who stayed in the
class in the spring of 2008 have also had many opportunities to work
on a variety of productions from dance to DFT Gecko Teatro's summer
production in a variety of tech roles from light board operator to
shift crew to backstage assistant to sound op.

Intermediate Theater
Incorporating acting,
movement and music in theater.
Learn more advanced acting
techniques and explore improvisation. Incorporate learning into the
presentation of winter and spring theater showcase. If you enjoy being on stage then this
is the class for you. Whether you are a beginner or have more stage
experience, we will move you forward in acting skills. You will
learn even more about stage movement, projection, singing and
dancing. Students participating in this class in the fall of
2008 will be eligible to audition for our spring 2009 Main Stage DFT
Gecko Teatro production.
