Show Synopsis: In the Devil's Frying
Pan is musical play about the founding of
Arizona, which we will be produced in honor of the
Centennial in February, 2012. The play has been named an
Official Centennial Event and a Centennial Legacy
Project, and is being produced by Desert Foothills
Theatre, an award-winning theatre company in Cave Creek.
The play will premiere at Pioneer Living History Museum
in early February, just prior to Arizona’s 100th
birthday, and then will move to the Arizona Historical
Society in Tempe for performances there. Following the
Tempe performances, the show will tour to Tucson and
Flagstaff through our partnership with the Arizona
Historical Society.
This project so unique is that the Arizona story is told
through first-person accounts of Territorial life, which
allows us to make this epic story intimate and personal.
In The Devil’s Frying Pan will be a multi-disciplinary
theatrical event, combining theatre, storytelling,
dance, original and period music, poetry, fine art, and
multi-media projections that will entertain as it
educates and celebrates the history of our state.
What the audition will consist of Cold
readings from script - this play is told through
first-person accounts through story telling with music

Director Submissions
Are you an experienced
director looking for an opportunity to direct for DFT? We'd love to hear
from you. Our artistic committee is nailing down our season for
2012-2013 and we will be looking for both youth theater and adult theater
directors.
-
We also have opportunities for directors who want to build their
portfolio to direct theatricales for us (these are small, in-home,
one-night theatrical "events"). In the past they have included an
evening of Shakespeare love sonnets interspersed with performances of
related music, an evening of Broadway show tunes performed concert
style, and dinner theater shows. We are looking for creativity,
ingenuity and something that works well in an intimate setting (like a
private home) or another unique setting.
In addition, we have a
very small (50-seat) black box and are looking for potential productions for
that space that might have a longer run.
We have three
performance spaces:
Large proscenium
theater -- seats 430
Large black box theater in same facility as proscenium -- seats 150
Small black box theater in building next to main facility -- seats 50
We also offer our
theatricales in either private homes or restaurant settings. These
could also be offered in unique settings if appropriate to the work...
If you are interested
in directing:
-
Send a cover
letter and resume outlining your directing experience.
-
Send any DVDs
(with self-addressed, stamped envelope) you may have of productions you
have directed.
-
Send a list of any
upcoming productions you are directing that we may be able to see.
-
Include your date
preference for directing and/or any hard conflicts
Please send complete
packet to: Desert Foothills Theater, 34250 N. 60th Street, Building B,
Attention: Artistic Committee. You may also email to
meribeth@desertfoothillshteater.com.
We will be choosing
our season in late fall and will announce our season in mid spring.
Due to our performance space belonging to the school district, we cannot
confirm production dates until late spring.
Arizona Series Play Submissions
The
Desert Foothills Theater
(DFT) is currently looking for two
plays for their “Arizona
Series”
for our next two
seasons. DFT is in the Cave Creek/Carefree/North Scottsdale area
and has been producing plays for over 30 years.
Interested playwrights may submit
only one play. To qualify for the
Arizona Series, a play must either be
written by an
Arizona playwright
or written with the
subject of the play being directly
related to
Arizona.
To be
considered for the Arizona Series, you must submit the following to the
chairman of DFT’s Artistic Committee (AC) no later than Wednesday,
December 3,
noon:
-
a 1-page synopsis of the play (No name
on the synopsis)
-
your bio
-
a 10-page writing sample from that play
(No name on any page)
-
if submitting a musical, one original
song with lyrics on CD
-
your contact info including mailing
address, cell phone and e-mail.
Submissions will be read without the playwright’s name on the script to
eliminate bias for known playwrights. The AC will judge
submissions and chose the top three. These plays will then be
submitted in their entirety to the AC for a final selection. The
developmental process may include staged readings to allow writers
continued development of their work.
DFT’s
Artistic Committee will make their decision and contact all applicants
no later than
February 5, 2009. Playwrights
will be paid royalties for each performance of their play; DFT usually
performs a show 10 times. Pay will be in the $50-$75 range per
performance.
Submissions
can be sent directly to DFT Artistic Committee Chair,
Sara Bernstein
34250 N. 60th Street, Building B
Scottsdale, AZ 85266
If
you have any questions, feel free to contact Sara through email at
sbernstein2178@hotmail.com.
